Important Update Regarding New USPS Postmark Practices
As of December 2025, the U.S. Postal Service instituted the Deliver for America Plan which includes how frequently mail is transported to regional processing centers where postmarks are applied. As a result, some mail may no longer receive a postmark dated the same day it is dropped off or collected, which could be problematic for time-sensitive filings and payments. It is estimated this could cause a 1-3 day delay before the official postmark date, impacting deadlines for taxes, bills, and ballots.
Per NYS Tax Law Section 691 and Real Property Tax Law Section 925, US postmark is required as proof of payment date. Please take note of these new postmark rules to avoid late fees. To ensure tax payments are received before the due date, the options available are:
- Go to a USPS retail counter and request a manual postmark stamp at the counter.
- Use one of the two drop boxes outside Williamsville Village Hall (5565 Main St) that are checked daily at 8:00am. Payments left in the drop box after that time will be considered received on the next business day.
- Pay in person at the Village Clerk’s office inside Williamsville Village Hall between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday through Friday.
For more information on postmarking rules, go to https://about.usps.com/newsroom/statements/010226-postmarking-myths-and-facts.htm or contact our Village Clerk’s Office at (716) 632-4120, Option 2.
Online Bank Payments
Most banks discourage the use of online banking for tax payments because they cannot guarantee your payment will be delivered to our office by the due date. If you utilize online banking, you do so at your own risk.
